NAIDOC 2025: Strength, Vision, Legacy | Mardaa Designs & Giveaway

NAIDOC 2025 is all about “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy”, a powerful theme that honours the past, celebrates the present, and looks ahead to a brighter future. It’s about the strength of our people, the vision for a better tomorrow, and the legacy we leave behind for the next generation.

We’re proud to work with our own Noongar artist Kevin Bynder to bring this theme to life through designs that carry deep meaning and cultural significance.

The Story Behind the Artwork

Kevin’s 2025 NAIDOC paintings “Strength, Vision & Legacy” tell a story of resilience, hope, and cultural pride:

Strength, Vision & Legacy

The 3 circles represent Strength, Vision and Legacy.

Strength: The strength of our Ancestors and our people who have fought for our land and our rights as First Nations People. The strength embedded in us that was given by our Elders. The strength of our Stolen Generation who never gave up. The strength to overcome, racism, discrimination and an oppressive system.

Vision: To see a better future. A future of better health, less incarceration, better help with relationships and mental health. A vision where we can make decisions for ourselves without racism, discrimination and prejudice.

Legacy: Our legacy is our Culture. Our Ancestors and Elders have given us strength and determination to succeed. Our Culture is now being heard and celebrated around the world and will to continue to do so. Our legacy will grow through the songlines and hard work by our young people for many years to come.

The 2 hands represent a Mother and Daughter. This also represents the Elders teaching the young ones about our culture whilst walking hand in hand.

The Waagyl.  The waterways were created by the Rainbow Serpent- Waagyl. The Waagyl created the land and lay dormant in the east of Whadjuk Country. The Darling Range is her body we call it KaataMoorda.. The 3 camping grounds are our hunting, Elders and gathering sites, this is where the young people learn about culture and practice what they learn.

Surviving through Six Seasons

The artwork consists of the 6 Noongar Seasons: Birak – Dec-Jan, Bunuru- Feb- March

Djeran- April – May, Makuru – June-July, Djilba – Aug-Sept, Kambaraang – Oct-November.

The NAIDOC theme for 2025 is Strength, Vision and Legacy. My Ancestors strength to  walk the land throughout these season hunting and gathering food, teaching the young people where to find the food, water and shelter. The Strength to battle through harsh conditions and survive, the strength to battle the colonisers and protect the family.

The Vision for foresee the what the land has to offer, the vision the show and teach the young generation and the vision to hunt and gather not only during the day but also at night during the hot seasons.

Our legacy started 60,000 yrs ago. Our Ancestors taught each generation our songlines which today we still know. The knowledge, the history, our strength, our resilience, our hunting techniques, the way we speak, our language, our kinship. This is Our Legacy tught to us b our Ancestors. The Waagyl: The Rainbow Serpent. This is our creator from the dreamtime she carved the boodja(country) and created everything we touch. Without her we wouldn’t of been able to survive all these years. Once she finished creating the land, she lay dormant as the Kaata – Morda or the Darling Range.
