FOODBANK WA
honouring 30 years
of nourishing our state
Our CEO and Mardaa artist, Kevin was commissioned to create a custom artwork for Foodbank WA to honour their 30-year journey of supporting families by feeding, educating and advocating for food security. The piece deeply connects to Foodbanks’s core values, representing the communities they sustain, the people working to make a difference and the Aboriginal heritage of the land their centre for hunger relief is situated on.
connecting to Foodbank’s legacy
to culture & Country
To celebrate the vital work Foodbank WA do for our community, Kevin crafted the artwork around the strong set of values that guide the important work they do. The blue circles that traverse across the centre represent their core values of respect, compassion, integrity and responsibility. Above this are Songlines which traditionally are ancestral paths that map the land and carry the lore of Dreaming. In this painting Kevin has used them to depict the values that each employee demonstrates in their work, which has helped them provide people with the food they need to thrive over the last three decades.
Through circles and colour Kevin highlights the vitality of Foodbank across Western Australia stretching from communities in the Great Southern to the Kimberley. Represented by a flowing pathway, the roots of the Belmont site and the heart of Welshpool are depicted to show the important foundational history that was built here. Dots and ‘U’ shapes represent the volunteers and staff who dedicate themselves to supporting families to fill their cupboards with dignity through the community warehouse and school programs.
At the very bottom of the painting you’ll find the Darling Range, which the Nyungar people name Kaata Morda. It reflects the Dreaming story of the Waagyl (Rainbow Serpent) who was the creator of all the land and lay to rest between four different Nyungar nations where Foodbank operates.
getting food to West Aussies
is always worth celebrating
With 200 guests in attendance, Foodbank WA brought together their community of staff and volunteers, connected charities, local ministers, and the Traditional Custodians of the land where the Boorloo shop floor is nestled.
The shop floor was transformed, with shelves moved and rearranged for the community to gather and celebrate. Mardaa assisted the Foodbank team with sourcing an Indigenous caterer, demonstrating our commitment to championing other First Nations businesses wherever we can. Kevin’s painting was unveiled at the event, where he spoke to the attendees about the meaning behind his artwork and the cultural stories that are shared through it. From the artwork, we created shopping bags that were gifted to all volunteers, with a small card carrying the story of the artwork for the volunteers who couldn’t be there to hear from Kevin on the night.
