custom signage leaving
lasting positive impacts

RFDS commissioned our CEO and Whadjuk-Yuet Nyungar and Widi-Badimia Yamatji artist, Kevin Bynder, to create a custom artwork that represented their story and the cultural knowledge of the land their Jandakot base sits on. Their Head of Nursing Paul Ingram, yarned with Kevin about how both stories could be entwined to create a shared sense of belonging among the staff.

ROYAL FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE

connecting Country, culture & care

The Royal Flying Doctor (RFDS) is a non-profit organisation, providing a team of medical clinicians and pilots who provide care to rural and remote areas across Western Australia. Mardaa collaborated with the team to create a custom building wrap for the Jandakot base doors and windows, representing stories of Country and RFDS WA’s core values.

sharing stories of Boodja and RFDS

The launch of the installation was commemorated with a Smoking Ceremony from proud Whadjuk Ballardong father and son, Daniel and Johnny Garlett. The staff at RFDS had the opportunity to learn about the traditional Nyungar practice, where Johnny explained the significance of a smoking ceremony to the Whadjuk People in cleansing and healing.

Daniel and Johnny performed a traditional Aboriginal song using Jurnha (tapping sticks) and the Yidaki (didgeridoo), while the gum leaves created white smoke to protect people from the bad spirits and provide visitors with a safe passage.

RFDS Story Image

Beyond signage, Mardaa provided the team at RFDS with lanyards and custom polo shirts that featured Kevin's design. Each of the polo shirts was made from 100% cotton linen to remain static-free around medical equipment and came with a custom swing tag featuring a short description of the story, reminding staff of the deeper meaning of the artwork before they head out onto Country.

Before RFDS engaged us, their Jandakot base was marked by simple branding with plain glass windows. Our vision was to create a vibrant, culturally connected artwork that transformed the space into a landmark. Our in-house designers are highly skilled in ensuring an artwork maintains its story when it’s extended or adapted to fit buildings of all shapes and sizes. By working closely with Kevin throughout the design process, our team ensured the final installation held the same authenticity as the original painting.
